Pearl Of The Orient

Penang, often referred to as the Pearl of the Orient, is one of the most picturesque and romantic cities in all of Asia. This tropical island lies in the Indian Ocean, just off the north-west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Penang received its name from the Pinang, or Betel Nut tree, once commonly found on the island. Established as the first British trading post in the Far East in 1786, Penang today is a bustling metropolis reflecting a uniquely exotic blend of East and West.

The state of Penang consists of the island of Penang and a strip of land on the mainland known as Seberang Prai.

The Penang Bridge, one of the longest in Asia at 13.5 km., links the two land masses. Penang is also connected by a ferry service to the mainland.

On Penang Island sits the capital, Georgetown, a city steeped in history and tradition yet sparkling with progress and modern development. Certain sections of Penang present a quaint picture from the past where narrow side streets, trishaws, temples and traders plying their goods, seeming to belong to a forgotten era. Penang is a shopper's paradise for goods old and new, at bargain prices.

There is a wide, competitive choice of cameras, electronic and electrical goods, clothing, batik souvenirs, antiques and knick-knacks.

The island also boasts some of the best food in the region, ranging from Nyonya Cuisine to food stall favorites like Nasi Kandar, Char Kway Teow and Penang Laksa, all of which are cooked in a uniquely 'Penang' style.

Getting to Penang, both from within and outside Malaysia is easy as Penang is well-connected by air, road, rail and sea.

By Air
Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia offer daily flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Bayan Lepas International Airport. The flight takes approximately 45 minutes.

Bayan Lepas International Airport also known as Penang International Airport is situated in the Bayan Lepas area of Penang. The airport is located 16 km. south of Georgetown, the capital city of Penang.

By Road
Penang on the side of Province Wellesley is connected to the North-South Expressway which traverses the western part of Peninsular Malaysia linking major cities and towns. The expressway also incorporates the Penang Bridge that is connected from the mainland thus making the island accessible by road.

By Rail
Penang has 34.9 km. of rail track within its border. Butterworth the main town in Seberang Prai (Province Wellesley) is serviced by the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) or Malayan Railway West Coast line which runs from Padang Besar on the Malaysia-Thailand Border in Perlis to Singapore. Senandung Malam is the daily night express running from Kuala Lumpur to Haadyai via Butterworth.

By Sea
The Port of Penang is operated by the Penang Port Commission. There are four terminals, one on Penang Island (Swettenham Pier) and three on the mainland, namely North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT), Butterworth Deep Water Wharves (BDWW), and Prai Bulk Cargo Terminal (PBCT). Malaysia being the 13th largest exporting nation, the Port of Penang plays a leading role in the nation's shipping industry, linking Penang to more than 200 ports worldwide. Swettenham Pier also accommodates cruise ships.

Cross-channel ferry services, provided by the Penang Ferry Service, connect George Town and Butterworth, and were the only link between the island and the mainland until the bridge was built in 1985. High-speed ferries to the resort island of Langkawi, Kedah in the north as well as to Medan, Indonesia are also available daily.
