Mersing is already a familiar name to many tourists to this part of Johor, as its town is the main staging point to the state's islands archipelago. In fact, Mersing is accurately dubbed as the 'islands paradise' for the many beautiful and unspoilt islands within its boundary. These islands are widely clustered in South China Sea. Some are only within 30 minutes' boat ride from the shore, while others require at least five hours to reach. To preserve and protect this natural heritage, more than twenty islands here have been gazetted as marine parks.
The far-flung islands are favoured by avid scuba divers as their serenity and calm convert them into scuba diving paradise. There are many underwater caves to crave for and shipwrecks to dive for. Lava TV of Zurich, Switzerland shot their Expedition Robinson 2000 in some of the islands here.
There are two mains staging points to these islands. The Mersing staging points in the town itself and could be used to reach all the islands. The Tanjung Leman staging point, located about 60 km. from Mersing town, is an alternative jetty, and is particularly suited to reach the cluster of Pulau Sibu islands.
Mother Nature seems to have a particular liking for Mersing. Besides islands, Mersing's coastline is lined with several idyllic beaches that could provide equally enchanting experience, particularly to those who like the sun, sea and sand.

Mersing Jetty |
The preferred staging point for the clusters of pristine islands off the east coast of Johor, Mersing Jetty provides access to the Rawa, Pemanggil, Dayang, Aur, and Besar Islands. Other islands including Tinggi, Apil, Sibu Besar and Sibu Tengah should be accessed via Tanjung Leman jetty, about 60 km. south of Mersing. The Mersing Boat Hire Association provides boats for inter-island travel or fishing. The Marine Park Information Centre (open from 8 am. to 4.30 pm. on Mondays to Fridays and 8 am. to 12.30 pm. on Saturdays) located on Jalan Tun Dr. Ismail, close to the Mersing Express Bus Terminal, is a good place to start if you want to find out more about Johor's islands before visiting them.
A visit to Mersing Jetty in the early hours of the morning will reveal why it is a favourite spot for photographers, with the many fishing boats docking in to haul their catch for the morning market, providing an interesting rustic background |
