The word 'Kluang' is a Malay name for a type of fruit bat. Some believed the name was coined after two mountains that resemble the head and wing respectively of a bat from a distance.
The year 1915 is an important year for Kluang, as it was the year Kluang town was founded to serve as the administrative centre for Central Johor. A railway line was constructed to Kluang town in the same year to provide the necessary communication link to transport labour and tropical produces from Kluang. It grew rapidly in the 1920s and 1930s as a major rubber-producing district.
Kluang district is the only district that does not have a sea front, as it is surrounded by all other districts, except Muar district. Kluang, however, is an agriculture hub of the state, as it has nearly 5,000 acres of dairy farm, locally known as Padang Hijau. Visitors to Kluang must not miss this farm, as it home to a special species of cattle called the 'Selembu' through the act of nature. Farmstay facilities are available.
The country's largest pineapple plantation and a lowland tea plantation are also located in this district. The district is also the main producer of ceramic pottery, with pottery factories located at the border township of Machap.
Kluang has two recreational forests. One of the forests located within the town limit, offers residents a convenient recreational ground and is to be developed into a modern city forest with chalet facilities and food outlets.
