CITIES & TOWNS

The present name of 'Batu Pahat' means 'chiseled stone' in Malay. It derived from the presence of a legendary well, Perigi Batu Pahat, which was believed to be chiseled from rocks by invading Siamese troops in hope to get fresh water during their retreat chased by Tun Perak, the famous Bendahara (Prime Minister) of the Malacca Empire. Another probable story to its name is believed that after the capture of Malacca, the Portuguese used laterite rocks taken from the river mouth of Batu Pahat to built the fortress, "A Famosa".

The old name of Batu Pahat is 'Bandar Penggaram', and it means the town of 'salt-makers'. This was because the town was a popular place to produce salted fish. The other explanation came from the fact that the low-lying town was frequently flooded and soaked with salt water.
